Bryce Canyon (June 29, 2009)

Visit of Bryce National Park: Hiking and stops at the main viewpoints. Short hike at Mossy Cave before leaving the park by Highway Scenic toward Escalante.

Bryce Canyon

For this day we had planned to discover Bryce Canyon National Park. This park with amazing coloured geological formation of rocks, with strange shapes (hoodoos), is one of the most famous parks of the southwest. It is a very popular park because, among other things, it is easy to get to: a road allows to go across the park, from north to south, and to reach the main viewpoints.
First we stopped at Sunset Point, from the parking we could only see pines but when we went closer to parapet we were able to enjoy the immensity of the park and its hoodoos. Hundreds of columns, all with different colours and shapes, rose in front of us.
From there we took a trail: Navajo Loop, at the beginning of the hike the narrow trail goes down quickly through rock faces. We were among hoodoos which we were overlooking previously. Then we continued our hike by combining with Queen’s Garden trail and we went up to Sunrise Point before reaching the car park. Two hours are needed to do the loop. Unfortunately this trail is very popular, maybe the most popular of the park; consequently there were a lot of people all along the trail.

Then we drove and reached Rainbow and Yovimpa Points, which are located at the south edge of the park. From there, in front of us we could see the 2700 meters high Grand Staircase, a series of plateaus forming the Colorado plateau. During the way back we stopped at different viewpoints. Natural Bridge is the most interesting, there is a red rock natural arch and green pines around.
Before leaving the park we did a short hike on Mossy Cave Trail, located in the north of the park. We followed a little water course, then the right trail leads to a small waterfall and the left trail leads to a shelter cave with a large overhang filled with moss; and probably with giant icicle in winter. The setting is very nice, the very clear water contrasts with the red rocks surrounding the area.
