Yosemite Valley (June 24, 2009)

Visiting Yosemite National Park and hiking the Panorama Trail. Driving on Tioga.

Yosemite Valley

We got up early, the night had been calm, and no bear attacked us during the night. After taking some pictures and drinking a coffee we left Yosemite Village.
This morning we went by car to Glacier Point, a point of view located around 1000 metres above us. From the top of this cliff the view over the valley is splendid. Waterfalls and granitic domes make Yosemite Valley one of the most beautiful places on earth.

Even if several days would be necessary for discovering the immensity of the park, we decided to hike partially the Panorama Trail. This 14 kilometres long trail goes down to Yosemite Village and includes close-up views of three waterfalls. As we did not have a lot of time we went to Illilouette Fall which is located after walking a quarter of the way.
The park has many waterfalls; some of them are more than 200 metres high. Illilouette Fall is not the most impressive but, even so is 112 metres high. After a short break we went back up; finally it took us 2 hours to do the round hike, but with an intensive pace.

Tioga Road

After this short hike, it is time to take the famous Tioga Road which leads to Death Valley. The road offers nice points of view like Olmsted Point and crosses beautiful landscapes: light lakes, green meadows and huge polished domes.
At Olmsted Point I saw a marmot, it is the first time I’ve seen one. There is a first time for everything! In fact it is not surprising to see one as Tioga Road gets close to 3000 metres high. Moreover there was still snow in places.

After Tioga Road we went to Bishop where we spent the night. Welcome to Bishop! Bishop: 3000 inhabitants, also known as “Mule Capital of the World”. Banks, a church, motels, only horses and saloons have been replaced by pick-up and fast-foods.
