From Grand Canyon to Route 66 (July 7, 2009)
Helicopter flight over Grand Canyon and drive on Historic Route 66.
Over Grand Canyon
We got up early to be at the airport at 7:30 am; we had chosen a 45 minutes helicopter tour. In the helicopter we are seated usually by weight and balance, I was seated next to the pilot! Moreover our first fly over the Grand Canyon was also our first fly in helicopter.
We were wearing headphones to listen to pilot’s comments about Grand Canyon. During first minutes we enjoyed flying over the tree-tops and were thrilled as we flew over the edge of the canyon which opened below us. It was a really impressive and unforgettable time! The fly was a real pleasure: helicopter offers spectacular views over the Grand Canyon. Forty five minutes latter we were back to the airport, we were shaking with joy.
Flagstaff and Williams
After the flight, we went back into the park to enjoy landscapes and have lunch. In early afternoon we left Grand Canyon toward Flagstaff to reach historic Route 66.
Flagstaff is, or was, located along route 66. This famous road went across the North American continent from Chicago to Los Angeles. Today, most of Route 66 is gone, leaving a few stretches of Historic Route 66 but people having a passion spend a large portion of their personal time working to promote and preserve Route 66.
We tried to follow as much as possible the Route 66, from Flagstaff to Williams, it was not difficult. We stopped at Williams for the night. Flagstaff and Williams are two good places to feel old-fashioned Route 66 atmosphere. We strolled around the streets between the few historic buildings.
